Less than hour's drive from Portland, Multnomah Falls is another must-see stop. The majestic falls consists of an upper and lower falls, making it Oregon's tallest waterfall. And what a sight...
Feel the cool mist of crashing water as you get closer up the falls, and when you reach the bridge at the top, the power of the falls become evident as the crashing waters drown out all other sounds (see my previous post on Multnomah Falls in my other blog here at http://dude4food.blogspot.com/2012/02/side-views-multnomah-falls.html).
Following the Union Pacific Railroad tracks along the Columbia River, the drive takes you out of the city and into the beautiful forests, and the gradual contrast in scenery makes the short drive a lot more special. After a quick stop at a gas station for some coffee, the short drive along forest roads makes you feel miles away from the city. A few stops here and there for some photos, and you drive further up to the distant sound of crashing water.
Trails leading to the falls are lined with trees wrapped in moss, adding a vibrant emerald green hue on a cold, chilly morning. The constant hum of the crashing water somehow adds a unique stillness to the cold morning.
And further up, the majestic falls come into full view. The route up the trail leading to the bridge offers dramatic views of the falls up close, and the cool mist reminds you just how close you are. It was off-season, and the few people along the trail added that special feeling of having the park all to yourself. And it was a great way to start the day...
