I still remember that day. There was a vacant parking slot right across Swan Oyster Depot. And with no hesitation, I quickly claimed the slot with my Hertz rental. It's not often you find a vacant slot near Swan Oyster Depot.
This was going to be my third time at Swan Oyster Depot, and every time I get a chance to visit San Francisco, Swan Oyster Depot's on the list. With a convenient parking slot secured, third time's always a charm...
If you're after fresh seafood, forget Fisherman's Wharf and just go straight to Swan Oyster Depot. Like my previous visits to Swan Oyster Depot, prepare to wait. Even if you arrive before they open at 10:30am, there's already a line (for more on Swan Oyster Depot, check out my post on my other blog here at http://dude4food.blogspot.com/2011/09/swan-oyster-depot-true-san-francisco.html). A family-run establishment, with the family's second and third generation manning the counters, Swan Oyster Depot is one of those San Francisco institutions that shouldn't be missed. Frequented mostly by locals, one can't help but be amused by the friendly over-the-counter banter between the staff and customers. It's that kind of place, which makes it even more special. Good food and a cool local vibe, just can't beat that.
Start with some fresh Blue Point Oysters, followed by Swan Oyster's Combination Salad, a refreshing salad with crisp lettuce, crab meat and shrimps. Then go for the lobster, steamed for 30 minutes, and served with melted butter, cocktail sauce, fresh lemon wedges and Tabasco. And go for a cold beer to wash it all down. It's not even lunch, but a cold beer's just perfect with the fresh seafood at Swan Oyster Depot. As all this is served, more people come in to take their seats at the counter.
Fresh seafood isn't cheap, and Swan Oyster Depot remains a cash-only institution. As you leisurely take your time enjoying the lobster and friendly over-the-counter banter, you forget about the parking meter...
Weeks later after the trip, I receive my credit card billing, including the parking violation fees. Shocked, it took some time before I settled down. But then again, nothing beats a fresh seafood brunch at Swan Oyster Depot. Just bring more loose change for the parking meter. A lot of loose change...
